Affordable Care Act Upheld - What It Means for Healthcare StaffingJune 29th, 2012 1 Min read Blog
Today marks a monumental event in our history, as the U.S. Supreme Court has announced it upholds the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act as constitutional. This decision will have an immediate and long-term impact on all Americans, as well as on healthcare staffing. Exactly how the ACA will play out remains to be seen, but one foreseeable outcome will be that 30-40 million more people will gain access to health insurance and patient care that they don't have today. This care will need to come from a pool of doctors that's already struggling to meet the demand from a growing, aging population. As a result, locum tenens physicians and advanced practitioners will be more in demand and play a bigger role in addressing the shortage. While locums can't solve this crisis alone, they will help to slow the physician shortage and bridge the quality care gap. This is particularly true for rural communities where locum tenens are often the only caregivers available. To our providers, I wish to express my gratitude for the quality patient care you tirelessly deliver. Your country needs you now more than ever. Another outcome will likely be increased pressure on hospitals and health systems as more money is tied to various quality measures. Physician retention will become more important and so will leveraging locum tenens to maintain continuity in patient care.
