Nov. 18, 2011 — CompHealth's parent company, CHG Healthcare Services, received a 2011 MarCom Gold Award Nov. 7, 2011 for the feature story "Miles Between Us, Three Lives Come Together in a Circle of Care" produced by CHG's in-house marketing agency. The MarCom Awards is an international creative competition that recognizes outstanding achievement by marketing and communication professionals. There were over 6,000 entries from throughout the United States, Canada and several other countries in this year's competition.
The story features Haleigh Sutherland, a CompHealth staffing recruiter in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Karen Williams, a traveling nurse practitioner who treated Sutherland's son, Miles, while on a CompHealth assignment. It illustrates Ms. Sutherland's journey in a local Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) after Miles was born severely premature with a 1-percent chance of survival. She details the impact that Ms. Williams had on her family, as well as reveals how she is moving forward from the six-month ordeal.
Ms. Sutherland joined CompHealth in 2010 as a healthcare staffing consultant for the allied health lab team. She matches providers to pathologist assistant jobs, histotech jobs, and cytotech jobs. These providers, specializing in the area of diagnosing diseases, work short- or long-term assignments in hospitals and reference labs.
Ms. Sutherland brings several years of experience to her role, working previously for other medical staffing companies. But the one experience she says is invaluable to her work comes from her experience in the NICU when she witnessed how the CH provider's expertise impacted her family. "I had no idea when I was in the NICU that Karen was on a travel assignment there," she says, adding that while all the nurses who treated her son were exceptional, Karen's contribution was the difference maker. Now Miles is a year and a half old, and while he still faces medical challenges, he is a "normal baby that cries, laughs and shows his independence—like any other child," she says.
When Ms. Sutherland works with healthcare providers now, she says she works to pay forward the superb care that her son received. She knows she may be placing another 'Karen' in the path of a family who will depend on the provider's expertise. "I've been in healthcare for many years and I've watched physicians, nurses and allied health providers change lives," she says. "But you never really know, until you're in a situation like mine, how imperative it is that we have people like Karen."
