UPDATE: We have great news for medical students! CompHealth is offering a $5,000 scholarship to one medical student in the United States. Last year's competition was an eye-opener. We were so impressed with all the outstanding video submissions that we decided to do it again. See more about last year's winner and his video below: Last summer we offered medical students in schools throughout the country the opportunity to apply for a $5,000 scholarship. To enter, med students were asked to make a two-minute video answering one of these three questions:
  • How do you plan to make a difference in the lives of your patients?
  • We get to know you so we can connect you with the just right job. How can you apply that mindset in your patient interactions?
  • How do you find a balance between your job and your personal life to avoid getting burned out?
There were lots of entries but at the end of the day only one person could win. And so the 2017 winner of the CompHealth Medical School Scholarship is... Michael Christensen from the University of Utah Medical School. See his winning video below: [su_youtube url="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dF9IhSHZc6U"] Michael's video focused on finding balance in his life. He identified a few ways that he is able to achieve balance. His tips are:
  • Involve your family in what you are learning
  • Take full advantage of what free time you have
  • Set aside time each week to step away from medicine
“The bottom line is balance is hard, but by including my family, making my free time meaningful and setting aside a day to recharge I am able to avoid burnout and maintain enthusiasm for this field that I love.”
We spoke with Michael after he won about why he chose to be a doctor. Michael is a third year medical student and is looking forward to residency in a year. He has wanted to be a doctor since he was in elementary school. "I always gravitated toward the sciences growing up and math and things and I’ve always considered myself to be more of a people person," he said. "My naive Elementary School/Junior High brain put those two together and thought a doctor sounds pretty great." About receiving the scholarship, Michael said: "I’d just like to say how much I and my family appreciate this scholarship from CompHealth. It is a huge financial relief to us. We’re very, very grateful that CompHealth would organize a scholarship like this. It was a lot of fun putting our video together. We just want to say thank you very sincerely for awarding us this scholarship and how much it is appreciated." The CompHealth Medical School Scholarship is an annual program aimed at helping a med school student with their tuition. “We work with physicians every day and appreciate the hard work and dedication it takes to become a doctor,” says CompHealth Locum Tenens President Lisa Grabl. “This scholarship is a small way we can show that appreciation and help the next generation of physicians.”
