minnesota_lakeYou’ve probably heard Minnesota called the “Land of 10,000 Lakes,” but there’s more to this state than just great fishing and boating. If you’re considering a general surgery assignment in Minnesota, read on for a few of the landmarks and attractions that await you: Shoppers’ paradise at the Mall of America. Even if you ordinarily despise shopping, you’re bound to find at least one store you like — out of more than 500 — at the massive Mall of America in Bloomington, just 11 miles south of Minneapolis. You can also visit the Sea Life Aquarium, which features more than 10,000 sea creatures, play miniature golf, try out a flight simulator and even enter a seven-acre theme park, Nickelodeon Universe, for roller coasters and thrill rides. Renowned museums, art and theater. Minneapolis is home to several famous museums, including the Walker Art Center, considered one of the nation’s top contemporary art museums, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. For a fun spring or summer outing, don’t miss the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, which features the famous Spoonbridge and Cherry and more than 40 other pieces. The Guthrie Theater boasts three stages that allow it to host regional, national and international productions and offers residencies to high school students as well. Access to great lakes (and one Great Lake). It’s only fitting that the state that invented water-skiing back in 1922 has nearly 12,000 lakes — and you’re never far away from one. Take a cruise on Lake Minnetonka, just west of the Twin Cities, or rent a paddleboard at Brainerd Lakes. Climb aboard a fishing charter and go out on Lake Superior or fish in Mille Lacs Lake, east of Brainerd, for walleye, bass and other species. If you’d rather relax and stay on land, Minnesota offers many beaches perfect for building sand castles and splashing your toes in the water. Unique Midwest attractions. Did you know Minnesota houses the SPAM museum — and admission is free? Other draws to this region include the Great Lakes Aquarium (America’s only freshwater aquarium) in Duluth, the Jolly Green Giant statue in Blue Earth, and the Hjemkomst Center, a museum that features replicas of a Viking ship and stave church.
