For some, the thought of traveling for work would mean more time away from family. However, Dr. Tom O’Mara found the opposite to be true. After running a private practice for many years, Dr. O’Mara found that he often was up and doing rounds at the hospital before his children were up in the morning. The day would often stretch on with critical care and consults coming at all times and he would regularly not return home until after his kids were in bed. Even when he was at home, his mind was often on his work and what needed to be done there. Locum tenens changed all that for him. “Now when I’m in my locum tenens assignment I work. When [my family is not traveling] with me I don’t have to worry about getting home. I can focus on my job. I can focus on my patients. I can focus on the families,” said O’Mara. “However, when I am home and I’m not on assignment, they have me and I’m all there. I can help my kids with schoolwork that may need to be done or I can take my kids out fishing or we can go play games in the backyard.” Removing the rigors of owning and operating a private practice and replacing it with locum tenens work gave Dr. O’Mara back to his family.

“So while it seems being gone two weeks at a time is actually less family time, actually it was more because the time that I do have off I’m engaged with them now,” said O’Mara.
